Up North Motorcycle Safety Courses



  2024 schedule  

 The e-Course,  an on-line course before the first class session, is part of the $50.00 fee.  BRCu and RRBRCu students will receive e-Course link from Tim McPherson via e-mail at least one week prior to start of class.Call 989-448-0246 if you did not get a link. The e-Course  on-line will take at approximately 5 hours to complete.   Bring in e-course printed completion  certificate  to the first day of class.

Basic Rider e- Course “BRCu” Fri night, all day Sat-Sun. Designed for the beginner rider who wants to learn to ride safely and need a cycle endorsement. BIKES WITH CLUTCHES ARE PROVIDED (completion waives Sec.of State Rider Skill and Written  Test)..Learn more click here

Returning Rider Course RRBRCu  ONE DAY (license waiver course)   Completion of e-course requiredFor the experienced rider who has their OWN (no borrowed or shared) insured bike or scooter to use in the course , wants to learn to ride safely and needs a cycle endorsement. (one day approx 8+ hrs).The RRBRCu is not intended for new riders with little or no riding experience. ADVANCED RIDER COURSE  (ARC) ....ONE DAY COURSE
ARC, the Advanced Rider Course, is the public version of the military sport bike course.
  It is the “best” Motorcycle Safety Foundation course out there for riders of all types of motorcycles to take on their own motorcycle. The class is a riding/small group discussion format.  Any insured street motorcycle can be used.  No loaned motorcycles will be available for this course. The challenge level is higher in this course.  A cycle endorsement is required.   

Student age:for all courses... Participants in all courses must be at least 15 years of age and have a valid (Level 1, 2 or 3 graduated driver license.) For students under 18 years of age, a parent or guardian must sign a participation waiver in front of the instructor or have the form notarized and returned to the instructor before the student will be allowed on the range. Covid-19 forms must also be signed by parents or guardians.



I sent my money and registration in to Tim McPherson..Now what?
 You should get a confirmation letter or e-Course link one-two weeks before the class start date. If no confirmation or e-Course link  has been received by then call Tim at 989-448-0246.

Be sure to include the $50.00 with the registration, if there is no fee included, the registration is void.
If you are unable to take the class, do not show up to the class, or are not on time, there is no refund.  Up North Motorcycle Safety has no jurisdiction over the fee or refund.


COACHING
ADDITIONAL  COURSE INFORMATION
A weekend BRC e- course begins with a classroom session.
Friday evening from 4 pm to 6:30. The Basic Rider Course handbook used thought out the course can be viewed at http://www.msf-usa.org/ click on library.  Students must bring with them e-COURSE Competion  Certificate 

If numbers require it,"A" and "B" Group is determined Fri.night for Sat. and Sun. riding on the Range. A normal weekend schedule is as follows-
 Saturday
"A" Group 8 am -10:30 am bikes on the Range...
 "B" Group 10:30 am- 1pm bikes on the  Range...
"A"&"B" Group Lunch/Written test-1 - 1:30 pm 
 "A" Group 1:30 pm - 4 pm Range...
 "B" Group 4 pm - 6:30 pm Range...


 Sunday schedule
 "A" Group 8 am - 10:30 am Range...
 "B" Group 10:30 am - 1pm Range...
  "A"&"B" Group Lunch 1pm - 1:30 pm. 
 "A" Group 1:30 pm - 4 pm Range....Last hour- riding test
 "B" Group 4 pm - 6:30 pm Range...Last Hour- riding test

 Schedule may vary because of weather, unforeseen circumstances, or coach's choice

Required safety gear for range exercises
1. D.O.T. Helmet... Full face, 3/4, or Half
 2. Eye Protection...Face Shield, Goggles, or Glasses

 3. Long Sleeves...Jacket or Shirt
 4. Full Finger Gloves
5. Long Pants with no tears or holes
 6. Over The Ankle Shoe or Boot
 7. Optional Rain Gear

WHAT IS NEEDED TO PASS ( BRC)or (RRC)?

e-Course students must have printed e-Course Completion Certificate first day of class
1. Attend all assigned sessions and be on time
PRACTISE SWERVING
2. Pass the Riding-Skills Evaluations    
3. Pass Written Multi-Choice Test with 80% or better
4. RRRBRCu students may be removed from the class if their riding skills are not considered
 adequate in the first two sessions. A Basic Rider Course (BRC) will be recommended

If you do not meet one or more of the above  criteria, you do not get a completion letter.

 If I don't pass, what can I do?
There may be riders who need more practice  to pass the requirements set by the State of Michigan and the Motorcycle Safety Foundation. These riders will be coached to take an alternative approach to getting the completion card such as, but not limited to, taking the course over to get more practice on their riding skills.

 PASSING THE BRC or RRBRC and receiving the completion letter WAIVES  the required Michigan Secretary of State written and skills test.
 THE SEC. OF STATE .The Secretary of State WRITTEN TEST can be taken at any time before the BRC or RRC ...THE WRITTEN TEST is taken to receive a Temporary Instruction Permit (TIP) to practice skills on your own bike on the road with an endorsed rider in view but is not required before taking the BRC or RRBRC 

Call for standby on full classes 989-448-0246 Sometimes people don't show up for the course. All student must attend Friday night (and all scheduled sessions) If a student is a "no show" there is no refund and a standby may take their place.  Walk ins are a first come- first serve basics. STANDBYS MUST SHOW UP FRIDAY AT THE BEGINNING OF THE CLASS TO GET A SPOT WITH THE COMPLETED E-COURSE CERTIFICATE. All students must pay the $50.00 fee in advance. (CASH OR CHECK)  No credit cards or late payment accepted.

DONATIONS Please make donation checks out to Otsego Co. Sheriff and send to Tim McPherson 3995 Hallock Rd. Gaylord, Mi. 49735. Any donation will help to continue to provide a quality Motorcycle Safety Program in the Up North. These donation will be used for maintenance, parts , fuel,  allowing the program to provide well maintained and late model motorcycles in our Basic Riding Course. As we all know, the cost of fuel and maintenance is ever growing, and these donation will help offset this expenditure. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR GENEROSITY
