Web Enhanced e-Course FAQs


 What is the online eCourse? 
The Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) has updated their curriculum for the Basic Rider Course to include an online, interactive eCourse which takes a portion of the classroom learning experience right into the comfort of your own home. The eCourse emphasizes the basic knowledge and concepts of riding a motorcycle. By covering key components of a motorcycle’s basic operation prior to class (e.g. motorcycle controls, riding strategies, etc.), students will arrive to class ready for their hands-on training.

 Who needs to take the online eCourse? Any student enrolling in a Basic Rider Course – Web Enhanced class must take the online eCourse - this is a required component of the class.

 How do I access the eCourse?

 A link to the eCourse will be emailed to all registered Basic Rider Course – Web Enhanced students at least one week prior to the class start date. Students need to complete the eCourse prior the class start date. Because access to the link will be provided via email, it is imperative for all registered students to have a valid email address on file with Tim McPherson (iridebmw@freeway.net231-546-3142


 Is there an extra charge to take the online eCourse?

No. The cost of the online eCourse is built into the cost of your class. Tim McPherson  will email you a specific link and unique/ personal coupon code for the online eCourse at least one week prior to the class start date.


 What if I do not have computer/internet access – can I still take the eCourse?

 Yes, students without computer and/or internet access may use computers at a local library, .


 How long does the online portion of the eCourse take?
 The online portion takes a minimum of 3 hours to complete. Students will have the option of going at a slower pace and/or repeating segments, if necessary. Students will also have the ability to complete the eCourse in multiple sittings.

 How long is my eCourse Certificate of Completion valid for? 

The eCourse certificate states that is valid for 30 days from the date of completion; however,we will recognize it as valid for up-to 60 days.


 Are there any prerequisites for the eCourse Basic Rider Course?
 There are two
:  Students must have the ability to ride a bicycle.
  Students must have a valid email address

  What equipment do I need to bring to class?
  A printed eCourse completion certificate is required for the first night of class.
  Riding Gear which includes: DOT-approved motorcycle helmet, long sleeve jacket or heavy shirt, heavy duty long pants, eye protection – goggles or glasses (required even with a face shield helmet), full fingered gloves, boots (ankles must be covered and boot must have a hard sole – high heels or high-top tennis shoes are not permitted), rain and cold weather gear, as needed.


 What if it rains ?

We do run class in inclement weather, so please dress appropriately. The instructor has final discretion on delaying a class due to weather. 

How much time will we spend in the classroom and riding on the range?
 This class consists of approximately 18 hours of instructions – 3 hours of eCourse instruction, 5 hours of classroom instruction, and 10 hours of hands-on training on the range.

The class hours listed are significantly more than required for the class, why do I have to be available for so many hours on Saturday and Sunday?
 During the first session, the class will be broken down into groups and specific riding schedules will be assigned. You will not be expected to be on site the entire time, but will need to be available the hours assigned to your group. We cannot predict or guarantee any specific times, so you must be available for the full time identified in the description.

 Can I come whatever time fits my schedule? Can I be late?

 Attendance is strictly enforced. The class schedule is strictly adhered to without exceptions. You must also be on time. Being late results in automatic failure, and on the first day of class, will forfeit your spot in the class. We do not offer make up times.


 Can I walk-in to a Basic Rider Course?
 Only students with an approved retake form from a previous course can attempt to walk-in to a Basic Rider Course. The number of walk-in seats available will be based on the number of registered student(s) who do not show up. Students with a retake form hoping for a walk-in seat should arrive no more than 30 minutes prior to the start time of the class. There is no guarantee that seats will become available, and seats are not assigned on a first-come, first-served basis.

 Do I need temporary permit before taking this course?
 No.

 Will I obtain my endorsement after taking this course?
 Upon successful completion of the Basic Rider Course, you will be issued a State of Michigan, Certificate of Completion which is good for one year from the date of issue and waives the riding skills test. You will still need to go to the Secretary of State’s Office and  complete the vision screening and pay the endorsement fee. 

 What is the cost of the Motorcycle Safety Courses? 
All of our Motorcycle Safety courses have a non-refundable and non-transferable fee of $50.00.

  Can I get a refund, transfer classes or switch with a family member?
 No. We apologize, but we are unable to process requests for refunds and transfers for Motorcycle Safety classes. Switching with a family member is also not permissible. Any family member wishing to take the class must register and pay on their own.

 I need to retake the Basic Rider Course, do I need to retake the online eCourse as well?
 If your new Basic Rider Course class begins within 60 days from the eCourse completion date printed on your certificate, then no. However, if it has been longer than 60 days, you will need to take the eCourse again.
